It's called 'Hamleto the Hamster' and it's by an amazingly talented Italian lady named Valentina "TYN" Sgaggero. (What an awesome name, yes?)

What is 'Hamleto the Hamster' comic about?
It depicts the Funny Adventures of a hamster named Hamleto,
his owner, Alice, and all their friends.

What's so special about Hamleto the Hamster character?
Hamleto's cheeky and sarcastic nature made me laugh as he 'bullies' his young and naive hamster owner, Alice. He reminded me of the funny antics of my hamsters and their attitudes towards me... Hilarious!

Picture of Hamleto the Hamster and Friends (aren't they ADORABLE??!!! I wish I could draw as well as Valentina.)

3 Reasons Why You Should Check Out This Comic Strip
Even though I've read other hamster comics before, this is by far, the *Best* Hamster Comic Strip I've seen so far.
I would describe its style to be similar to the famous 'Garfield the Cat' comic.
It's such a great comic for 3 reasons:

I learned something - that hamsters have the sense of touch on their whiskers called 'Vibrissae'. That's a long word... V-I-B-R-I-S-S-A-E. :) I feel smarter already. *hee*

It's so sweet and it made me laugh!

It's updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which means there's even more hamster cuteness to be enjoyed for the following days to come! *Yay!*

I strongly encourage you visit Hamleto the Hamster's website and have a laugh too!
It's time for the 1st edition of:

'Hamsters Cages Photos of the Week'!

(Hamster Hammock in Ferplast Mini Duna)

I've always wanted a hamster hammock but as you can see from my previous post, all my hamsters cages do not have a lid for me to hang the hammock. The hamsters (Yegor and Viktor) must be feeling so comfortable and cosy inside! Bet my hamsters will love the hammock if I get them one.

It seems like the Ferplast Mini Duna is quite a popular choice among dwarf hamster owners in UK. I think it is because the Ferplast Mini Duna provides sufficient space for the dwarf hamsters. The Mini Duna is also designed to make sure that bedding does not get kicked out from the sides. It is a nice and well thought design by Ferplast.

Thanks for the photos Kathryn. =)
Answer: Practical guidance from bloggers who have achieved a reasonable amount of success.

After doing some research and reading, the advice I received today is:
Come up with a 'posting plan' for my blog.

What are the benefits of having a posting plan?

To have a steady stream of ideas that are ready to be developed into useful blogposts.

To give readers a feeling of certainty about what to expect. (When is the next post? What is the next post about, etc)

To give myself some structure and discipline about how often to post.

When I have a schedule, it's easier to move forward with other projects and tasks because I can relax knowing that there's a time and place for everything and that everything that needs to be done will get done.

After some consideration, having 'Themed Days' seems to be a good idea. I can have :

Hamster-Related Fact of the Week | Hamster Fact of the Day | Trivia | General Knowledge

a mousetrap [http://glass.typepad.com/journal/2005/09/how_to_catch_a_.html]
and simply had to share it here because it's so relevant to
how to catch an escaped hamster. (Yes, it can happen even with the best
of hamsters cages at times.. which is why it's so important to assess the safety
of your hamsters cages)

A picture speaks a thousand words...

How to Catch an Escaped Hamster

This method makes more sense to me than what I've
read from other articles and forums even. Everyone talks
about the ramp method but my question is always...

"How's the hamster going to smell the food all the way in the bucket?"

The method she describes soothes the doubts in my mind because
it's now possible to put the bait (hamster treats) at the TOP of the ramp,
not at the bottom of the pail/bucket.

Using an additional tunnel (toilet roll), put the food inside and place it
at the top of the ramp so that it tips over once the hamster gets in it.
(Doesn't it just make more sense to you too?)

Summary of How to Catch an Escaped Hamster
[I quote]:

Get a toilet paper tube and crease two lines to form a flat sided tunnel.

Put a treat on one end of the tube: A cracker and dab of peanut butter works great.

Get a tall (at least 20 inches) bucket. A trash can works well.

Balance the tube precariously on the edge of a table or counter with the treat hanging directly over the tall sided receptacle.

The mouse will scurry to the treat (they like tunnels) and fall into the trap.

[end quote]

Wishing your hamster returns safely home soon!

P.S. Hammu ran away thrice in his lifetime and he always came back
for Sunflower Seeds. If you're still not sure what your hamster's favourite
treats are, you can also try using Mealworms (our female Roborovski hamsters prefer this).
Otherwise, something Sweet like yoghurt drops or fruit might do the trick. Good luck!
This is a Patagonian cavy, a 35 pound South American rodent.
It's the 4th largest rodent in the world!
As I was hamstering around the Internet (as usual),
I stumbledupon this lovely article about this lady named
'Mary the Cheerio Trainer' who was volunteering and
had the honour to interact with some lovely animals
named a 'Cavy'.
http://stalecheerios.com/blog/orca/training-a-35-pound-rodent-oh-my/

The reason I loved stumbling across this article is that I
learned so much in less than 2 minutes!
Here are 3 things I learned:

I've learned that the Cavy is the 4th largest rodent in the world. (This was the first time I've seen a Cavy! I feel so worldly wise all of a sudden.. ^_^)

The first three largest rodents are capybaras, beavers and porcupine. (I've seen photos of capybaras, beavers and porcupines before but I never imagined they were that huge! The cavy in the photos look about the size of a medium sized dog.. which means a full-grown capybara, beaver and porcupine must be quite large indeed.)

Most importantly, I'm reminded to be more patient with my Roborovski hamsters and to train them using 'positive reinforcement'.

Thanks again for your post Mary the CheerioTrainer!
(PS: I even read her post out loud to my bf, who agreed
to use positive reinforcement on our hamsters so we can
give them their eyedrops and vitamin drink.) ^_^

P.P.S I'm very cheerful indeed after reading this blogpost.
I hope you learned something new today too!
We are using acrylic plastic tanks (for fishes and other small pets) and a pink container bin to house our Roborovski hamsters.

The clear acrylic / plastic tank size is H30 x W45 x D30cm. That's where Hamsti, the father lives. You can see him running on his wheel in the photo below...

The larger pink tub / bin cage is H32 x W53 x D36cm. That was where Hamionee (mum) and her babies (less than 4 weeks old) lived and played together. We've since separated the males and the only female baby (Hamsue) lives with mum.

As you can see, there's enough space for a wheel, food bowl, water bottle, toys and extra room for our Roborovski cuties to run around.

We're especially pleased with how transparent the acrylic tank is because it's much easier to watch Hamsti clean, run around and just be his adorable little self.
It's great for photo-taking too. :)

Step 1. Decide on which hamster cage SIZE to buy.
Did you know there's a minimum cage size you should get according to your hamster's breed? Keep your hamster happy by giving it enough space to run around and still have room for its toys.

Experienced owners recommend:

Syrians hamsters cages - at least H12" x W12" x D24" (H30.5 x W30.5 x D61cm)

Dwarf hamsters cages - at least H16" x W16" x D20" (H40 x W40 x D50) for 2 dwarfs

Keep in mind how big your hamster will be when it grows into an adult and whether more than one hamster will be living together in the same cage. (Note that adult Syrian hamsters need to live alone.)

Step 2. Decide what TYPE or types of hamster cages you prefer.
There are 6 general types of hamsters cages. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Wire hamsters cages

Fully Plastic hamsters cages

Bin/tub cage

Plastic top and base with wire sides

Glass hamster cages / Glass tanks

Acrylic hamster cages / Acrylic tanks

Step 3. Assess how SAFE the hamster cage is.

Will it hurt itself if it falls down? Hamsters might jump from a high place when startled.

Are there places where your hamster might get stuck?

Are there sharp or rough edges where your hamster might cut itself?

Can other pets potentially reach your hamster and harm it?

Is the cage door tight enough? Some hamsters, especially Syrian hamsters are very good at unlatching their cage doors.

Are there potential places your hamster can escape from?

Does it give your hamster enough ventilation? Hamsters can fall sick or die from overheating.

Will it protect your hamster from cold drafts? Hamsters can fall ill or die if the temperature changes a lot in a short period of time.

Step 4. Assess how EASY TO CLEAN this hamster cage is.

Is it easy to disassemble and reassemble? While it's recommended that you need to clean the cage at least once a week, it makes more sense to clean or refresh your hamster's cage when it starts to give off an unpleasant smell. Choosing a cage that allows you to do this easily helps you to give your pet a clean and hygienic environment.

Step 5. Find out What OTHER OWNERS Have to Say about the hamster cage you want to buy.
The easiest way is to visit a website that sells hamsters cages and read the customer reviews and comments.

Here are some reliable sites that have sold to many customers, offer a cheap price, and include discounts like free delivery:

[UK] *http://www.Petplanet.co.uk (*highly recommended: the cheapest site for new Rotastak, Habitrail, Ferplast, CritterTrail cages + customers give the most honest reviews we've seen so far!)

[UK] Amazon.co.uk (many suppliers to choose from, can be confusing.)

[UK] Ebay.co.uk (can be quite confusing and reviews are not very specific.)

[US] Ebay.com (beware hidden delivery shipping charges)

[US] Amazon.com

If there's more than one cage that you like and you need even more help to choose a hamster cage, why not use a scoring system? Give the hamsters cages you like a score from 1 to 5 each in the area of

size,

safety,

easy-to-clean,

price.

Relax and invest your money in those hamsters cages that scores the highest.

Wishing you and your hamsters fun, health and happiness!
